knot,
n. a closed space curve, formed by looping and interlacing a piece of string and joining the ends together; a set of points in space topologically equivalent to a circle. Any two knots are topologically equivalent, but it may not be possible to transform one into the other by continuous deformation, that is, without breaking the string. Knot theory studies the possible types of knots and their deformability properties.
