Dirichlet's problem,
n. the partial differential equation problem that looks for solutions to Laplace's equation in a region subject to boundary conditions. These are typically either requirements of Dirichlet type that the solutions agree with a given continuous function on the boundary of the region, or of Neumann type that require the normal derivative to satisfy a boundary condition. Pontryagin's maximum principle implies the uniqueness of the solution in many cases.
