commutative
or permutable, adj. 1. (of an operator) giving the same result irrespective of the order of arguments. For example, in the reals, addition is commutative since a + b = b + a, but subtraction is not since a - b ≠ b - a.
2. (of a structure) possessing a commutative operator. A commutative group is called Abelian.
