Compare indicator function. 2. another term for the characteristic polynomial of a matrix. 3. (Statistics) a function derived from the probability distribution function that in particular enables the distribution of the sums of random variables to be analysed since two distributions have the same characteristic function only if they are identical almost everywhere.
