adj. (of an expression, etc.) expressed in a standard form of given type, sometimes called a normal form; often a canonical expression is unique. For example, the canonical decomposition of an integer is a product of powers of its prime factors; the canonical equation of a circle is x² + y² = r², where the center is taken to be the origin.
