Visit booth 3603 at NECC to see Interactive School Mathematics (ISM) for yourself.
In California, an estimated $400 million is spent every year updating textbooks that many schools don’t even use. At NECC 2006 in San Diego, MathResources will showcase Interactive School Mathematics (ISM), a completely computer-based curriculum that eliminates the need for textbooks and calculators.
By eliminating the need for textbooks and calculators, ISM frees up money that school districts can use to:
Sustain and expand 1:1 computing initiatives
Integrate technology and curriculum
Replacing textbooks only makes sense if the new digital content a district purchases is of equal or superior quality. MathResources has addressed this concern by assembling a distinguished team of math educators. They are led by Bill Masalski, the Editor of the NCTM 2005 Yearbook entitled Technology-Supported Mathematics Learning Environments, and Carey Bolster, the 2006 winner of the two most prestigious awards in math education, the Glenn Gilbert Award from the National Council for Supervisor’s of Mathematics (NCSM) and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics’ (NCTM) Lifetime Achievement Award.
Carey and Bill are highly regarded by math educators within the NCSM and NCTM communities and have attracted a team that includes the current President and Executive Director of NCSM, two past Presidents from NCSM, four former state math supervisors and a past President of NCTM.

Because ISM’s author team has experience leading state and district math programs they know first-hand the challenges and the expense involved in training teachers. They have made sure that teachers who use ISM will just have to learn the software, not an entirely new way of teaching. Their basic motto in developing ISM has been “Evolution, not revolution.” ISM takes full advantage of the expertise classroom teachers already have. Massive amounts of time and money do not need to be spent re-inventing how teachers teach.
Another critical advantage of making the move from textbooks to ISM’s computer-based curriculum is the increased flexibility that digital content offers. Textbooks start to become dated the minute they are printed and their content cannot be re-organized or adapted to meet student needs.
Built using Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) standards and specifications, ISM’s digital content has been designed to be shared, reused and integrated into whatever learning management system (LMS) a district is using.
Each of ISM’s different pieces of content have been defined as individual learning objects that teachers can potentially use as building blocks to tailor individual lessons or the entire curriculum to unique student audiences.
MathResources is currently piloting ISM in schools across North America. Districts interested in piloting ISM are invited to visit MathResources at booth #3603 in the exhibit hall.
