Press Release

MathResources to Introduce Administrators
to Let’s Do Math Interactive Dictionary
& the Power of Math Vocabulary at AASA in San Diego

February 20th, 2006

MathResources will introduce administrators attending the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) meeting in San Diego next week to Let’s Do Math Interactive Dictionary (Booth # 118). Let's Do Math provides a highly visual, interactive context for building academic vocabulary in mathematics.

New research conducted in 2004 and 2005 by well-known literacy expert Dr. Marzano directly connects standards-based vocabulary instruction and future academic achievement in all subject areas. Marzano’s research is described in detail in his book Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement: Research on What Works in Schools that is published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).

Mathematicians, math educators and organizations like the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) have been pointing to the critical need for students to learn math vocabulary for over 20 years years but their message has largely gone unheard. This has led to far too many students who:

  • Lack the vocabulary needed to understand the concepts they are studying
  • Can memorize algorithms & do calculations but can't explain their work
  • Can't apply the math they learn to real world situations
  • Have great difficulty solving word problems
  • Score poorly on high stakes tests

At AASA, MathResources will demonstrate how easy Let’s Do Math Interactive Dictionary is to use and the vital role it can play in a district’s efforts to build math vocabulary. References to Dr. Marzano’s research and publications, along with a list of books and articles by math educators focused upon the critical need for math vocabulary, will also be available to administrators stopping by the MathResources booth (# 118) in the exhibit hall.

Visitors to the MathResources booth can enter to win a free 30 copy site license for a classroom or computer lab in their school district. MathResources will also provide visitors with a special web address that educators in their districts will be able to use for a limited time to try Let's Do Math online.

MathResources looks forward to meeting with administrators attending AASA in San Diego next week. If you will not be attending AASA, we would still love to hear from you and would be happy to send you information about Let's Do Math and the research regarding the importance of math vocabulary.
